Rescuers have intercepted a boat carrying migrants that had drifted in the Mediterranean for days after a breakdown. According to reports, about 60 of the 85 occupants lost their lives, including at least one child.
Survivors’ accounts state that dozens of occupants of a refugee boat stranded in the Mediterranean have perished while attempting the crossing to Europe.
The rubber boat set off from Sawija in Libya eight days ago and drifted at sea without food and water for the passengers following an engine failure, as explained by the aid organization.
The survivors were rescued by the “Ocean Viking” search and rescue ship in cooperation with the Italian Coast Guard in the Libyan search and rescue zone.
Last year, at least 3,105 migrants were reported dead or missing during attempts to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The central Mediterranean route remains one of the most dangerous for refugees heading to Europe. The IOM stressed the need for urgent measures to bolster patrols at sea and prevent additional tragedies.
Italy and other EU countries are working to reduce the number of refugees. They have offered Libya and Tunisia financial aid or equipment to prevent people from departing from their coasts.
