Severe storms in the US state of Tennessee have claimed the lives of at least six people. The city of Nashville reported three fatalities, according to the city’s emergency center. Three additional victims, including a child, died in Clarksville, located about an hour’s drive from Nashville. The county administration confirmed that a tornado had swept through the area, resulting in 23 people being taken to hospitals for injuries. Homes were severely damaged and power lines were torn down in both locations. Authorities estimate that around 80,000 people are without electricity.
Clarksville Mayor Wes Golden described it as a “sad day” and expressed prayers for all the injured and those who had lost loved ones or their homes. Emergency shelters have been established for those in need of assistance.
Residents of the city have been advised to stay in their homes to allow for the free movement of rescue vehicles. Videos showed the tornado making its way through Clarksville, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
The Nashville emergency center reported that rescue teams are still searching for injured individuals and assessing the extent of the damage.
