A Chinese military ship has drawn attention after reportedly acting aggressively towards a US warship near Taiwan. The incident occurred in the Taiwan Strait and involved a Chinese patrol ship and the US destroyer USS Chung-Hoon. The US Navy reported that the Chinese vessel approached them in a dangerous manner, bypassing the destroyer at just 140 meters and then later turning sharply. The Chinese defense minister, Li Shangfu, defended his side’s actions while also blaming the US and its allies for the conflict. Shangfu warned the US to avoid meddling in the Taiwan issue, citing heightened tensions in the region as the Chinese government seeks to reunite Taiwan and mainland China.
Li insists that patrolling US ships through Taiwan Strait only makes things worse and China will not hesitate to use military force should Taiwan seek independence. The Taiwan issue has been a key point of tension between China and the US for many years. China claims that Taiwan is a part of the mainland and wants it returned, even if it means using military force. The US maintains its strong section with Taiwan, including arms sales, and regularly conducts joint military exercises with local forces. Despite being warned away from such activities, the US shows little sign of backing down.
US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin has called for caution and respect for sovereignty in matters involving Taiwan. He has warned that even minor disturbances could have an immediate impact on the world economy. Austin urged China to refrain from any actions that escalate matters. Nevertheless, he expressed that conversations are necessary when two of the world’s most significant military powers are shaping events in the Asia-Pacific region. He stressed the need for communication channels of all types to remain open and available.
Pistorius Warns Against Attacks on International Security Order
Bundeswehr Minister Boris Pistorius has attended the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, where he urged the international community to defend the rule-based global order wherever it is threatened, including the right to freedom of navigation. The SPD politician stated that Germany is ready to assist in all bilateral or multilateral efforts to build trust and promote peace, such as through the exchange of information and the inspection of military facilities. He stressed the importance of upholding the law rather than seeking to achieve goals through force.
