Decision on Petrobras’ Equatorial Margin Exploration Imminent

The head of Brazil’s environmental agency disclosed that a decision regarding Petrobras’ request to explore the Equatorial Margin is imminent. Last year, Ibama blocked Petrobras’ plans due to concerns over potential impacts on Indigenous communities and the environment, leading to a pending appeal.

Discussions between Ibama and Petrobras are ongoing to address the exploration proposal. Petrobras’ new CEO, Chambriard, stressed the significance of exploring new oil frontiers like the Equatorial Margin while emphasizing the need for environmental safety in their operations.

The Brazilian government, represented by Energy Minister Silveira, aims to collaborate with Petrobras and Ibama to establish a sustainable approach for the exploration to proceed. President Lula da Silva has voiced support for Petrobras’ initiative, highlighting the importance of seizing the opportunity presented by the Equatorial Margin.

Chambriard expressed readiness to engage in discussions with Environment Minister Marina Silva while stating that Petrobras has complied with all environmental requirements set by Ibama. However, Petrobras recently declined Ibama’s request for additional studies on the potential impact on Indigenous communities near the proposed drilling site.

The Equatorial Margin is considered Brazil’s most promising area for oil exploration, sharing geological similarities with neighboring Guyana, where Exxon Mobil is active and has made substantial discoveries.

The report was prepared by Maria Carolina Marcello in Brasilia and Fabio Teixeira, Rodrigo Viga Gaier in Rio de Janeiro, with writing contributions by Luana Maria Benedito and editing by Kylie Madry and Nick Zieminski.
