Authorities have issued warnings of landslides and floods due to heavy rainfall in the southwest of Japan. In the city of Kumamoto, located on Japan’s southwest main island Kyushu, hundreds of thousands of residents were called upon to seek safety. In the town of Yamato, a concrete bridge over a small river collapsed. According to local media, no injuries were reported. The national weather agency in Tokyo has also issued warnings for Tuesday of further heavy rain and severe thunderstorms.
China is also facing severe floods. According to authorities, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated in the central Chinese province of Hunan. Around 70 houses are reported to have collapsed and 2,283 to have been damaged. The Zhenba district in the Shaanxi province experienced the worst flooding in 50 years. There have been no reports of casualties so far. In addition, southern China has been battling an unusual heatwave for weeks, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures in the capital Beijing have slightly dropped, reaching 33 degrees Celsius at noon. Nevertheless, an increase to up to 39.6 degrees Celsius in Beijing and other parts of the country is expected for this week.
