All French Government Resigns, CNN Reports
The French government has resigned, with President Emmanuel Macron expected to appoint a new Prime Minister in the coming days.
In a recent vote, lawmakers in France expressed their lack of confidence in Prime Minister François Bayrou and his government, leading to their resignation. According to CNN, this decision plunges the country into a new political crisis, leaving it without a government amid rising economic pressures and geopolitical tensions.
In total, 364 deputies voted against Bayrou, while 194 voted in favor, following his announcement of a vote aimed at promoting an unpopular austerity plan worth €44 billion ($51 billion). This plan included the cancellation of two public holidays and a freeze on government spending. The 364 votes against Bayrou significantly exceeded the 280 votes needed for the government to step down.
Bayrou’s government has been in power for nine months, and now the Prime Minister must submit his resignation to President Macron. The departure of the Prime Minister leaves Macron with few acceptable options, as noted by journalists.
What to Expect in the Future
The possibility of Bayrou’s resignation even before the vote has sparked calls for Macron to step down as well. The President has promised to serve out his term to completion.
Ultra-right leader Marine Le Pen has called for the dissolution of Parliament, but new elections would almost certainly strengthen her party and further fragment the French Parliament. Another option for Macron could be appointing a caretaker government while seeking a new Prime Minister.
Potential candidates for the position may include France’s Minister of Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, and Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin. Meanwhile, Reuters, citing the Élysée Palace, reports that Macron is expected to appoint a new Prime Minister within the next few days.
