Suspected Arsonist Arrested More than 70 people died in a massive fire in the center of Johannesburg last summer. It appears to have been an act of arson. Now, a 29-year-old man has been arrested.
South African police have arrested a man in Johannesburg who is believed to have started a fire five months ago. Before an investigative commission, the 29-year-old allegedly admitted to being responsible for setting the fire in the five-story building, according to a police spokesperson.
At the time of the fire, the building was officially vacant, but in reality, hundreds of people were living there illegally. More than 70 people died in the blaze, including twelve children. There were numerous injuries. Fire Intended to Conceal Murder
Media reports indicate that the man allegedly started the fire to cover up a murder. He is said to have been under the influence of drugs at the time. The suspect is expected to face charges of arson, 76 counts of murder, and 120 counts of attempted murder.
The city center of Johannesburg is known for being rundown and dangerous. Many buildings are abandoned and occupied by criminals or homeless individuals. Property owners no longer maintain their buildings and properties. The burned-down building was owned by the municipal administration.
