“The Adults are Back”

According to ARD correspondent Annette Dittert, after the cabinet reshuffle, the appointment of Cameron and Cleverly in key positions in the UK signifies the return of reliable politicians. This also means that the cabinet is shifting back towards the center.

The cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak came as a complete surprise to observers, as noted by ARD correspondent Annette Dittert. She describes it as a “desperate move” by Sunak to “fill the cabinet with adults” again.

Regarding the appointment of David Cameron as Foreign Secretary, Dittert remarks that it is not only unusual to have a former prime minister in the cabinet but also expects it to cause unrest among the Tories, especially on the right of the party. Cameron, who resigned as prime minister after the Brexit referendum, advocated for remaining in the EU, whereas Sunak campaigned for Brexit.

On the other hand, the dismissal of Home Secretary Suella Braverman was anticipated. Dittert explains that she was positioned on the far right of the party and had repeatedly acted independently and made controversial statements. Dittert sees the appointment of James Cleverly, the previous Foreign Secretary, as a provocation and affront to the right-wing Tory faction. Cleverly is considered more moderate than Braverman and is likely to continue her policies in his own way.

“In summary, the grown-ups are back – Sunak can now rely on adult and reliable politicians in two important positions,” analyzes the ARD correspondent. Furthermore, the reshuffle symbolizes a slight shift from the right back to the center.
