Spain: six dead and two injured after the fall of a bus in a river

A bus accident in Spain left six dead and two injured, according to the final report communicated by the local authorities on Sunday, December 25. The vehicle fell into a river while traveling on a bridge, Saturday shortly before 9:30 p.m., in the municipality of Cerdedo-Cotobade, in Galicia.

A total of eight people were on board the bus, which linked the city of Lugo to Vigo. The first two victims were found overnight from Saturday to Sunday, near the wreckage of the bus. The other four were located on Sunday, according to a Civil Guard spokesman. In addition, two survivors were rescued, including the driver of the vehicle and a passenger. They were hospitalized.

“The rescue teams confirm that all the missing people have been rescued,” assured the Galicia emergency service at the end of the afternoon, specifying on Twitter that the search device was going to be lifted. It must be said that for a few hours, a doubt remained as to the number of people who remained missing. Because according to a spokesperson for the Civil Guard, the driver, in shock at the time of his pick-up, had “a doubt” about the number of passengers who were in the bus at the time of the accident, a- he told AFP. A motorist gave the alert after noticing that the safety rail was destroyed on the bridge where the accident took place. The emergency services then received a call from inside the bus. Due to “unfavorable weather conditions”, marked by intense rains which suddenly increased the flow of this river, the search had to be temporarily suspended overnight, said the emergency services.

In addition to the unfavorable weather conditions, the site of the accident also posed difficulties for the rescuers. Under the bridge there is “a fairly significant drop”, explained the spokesman for the Civil Guard.
