DeSantis apparently to announce candidacy on Twitter

Ron DeSantis, the popular governor of Florida, will apparently challenge Donald Trump today in the Republican race for the US presidential nomination. However, his approach to announcing his candidacy is surprising.

According to reports from US media, the prominent Republican, Ron DeSantis, will announce his expected candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on Twitter today.

In a conversation with Twitter CEO Elon Musk broadcast on the platform, the Florida governor reportedly announced his plan to become the Republican candidate and challenge President Joe Biden. The event is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm local time (midnight CEST).

Musk confirms event

Musk confirmed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he would interview DeSantis. “He has a pretty big announcement,” Musk said. The conversation will not follow a script and will be spontaneous.

When asked who he would prefer for the 2024 election, the multi-billionaire said he and most Americans would prefer someone in office who is “reasonably normal” — an apparent dig at the erratic former president, Donald Trump.

DeSantis is a conservative hardliner

44-year-old conservative hardliner DeSantis is currently one of the most promising candidates for the Republican nomination, according to polls, alongside Trump, who announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential race in November.

DeSantis has been governor of the southern US state of Florida since early 2019. In November 2022, he was re-elected with a strong result, which also strengthened his position as he aspires to higher office.

DeSantis’ wife releases video teasing announcement

DeSantis’ wife, Casey, released a video in the evening that visibly teased the impending announcement. With the pathos of a Hollywood film, the politician apparently steps behind a large stage with a US flag hanging behind him. A voice says to the cheers of an unseen audience, “They call it faith because in the face of darkness, you can see a better future. A faith that our best days lie ahead.”
