Nawalny Ally Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison
A supporter of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia on charges of “establishing an extremist organization,” according to her supporters. Xenia Fadeeva has been convicted by a court in Tomsk, and her lawyer plans to appeal the verdict.

Many supporters of Fadeeva reported that on December 27, an ambulance had to be called as both the politician and her lawyer felt unwell due to not receiving any food during a twelve-hour hearing. Fadeeva had been an active member of Navalny’s team in Tomsk, where the Kremlin critic himself was poisoned during a visit in August 2020. Following the incident, Fadeeva and other activists were elected to the city council of Tomsk, marking a rare success for the Russian opposition.
In 2021, Navalny’s organizations were classified as “extremist” by the authorities and subsequently banned. This move forced many of Navalny’s allies to leave the country in order to avoid criminal prosecution. However, contrary to the trend, Fadeeva chose to remain in Russia and continued her activism, only to be arrested in December 2021 on charges of organizing an “extremist” group.
